La Residencia, Deia, Mallorca
Room: If you're looking for full on bling, forget it. This is rustic chic at its best, terracotta tiles, wooden beams and white walls. We stayed in a superior room which was spacious with a sitting area and bathroom with tub. Rooms have everything you want including free wi-fi. The bedding is gorgeous and the shutters make for a fantastic night's sleep. Our room was just above the breakfast room which made things very easy in the morning.
Service/staff: The staff are delightful and always helpful without ever being intrusive. Reception can organise anything, they recommended and booked riding for us without any fuss.
Dining: The food is excellent in all dining areas. The breakfast room is spacious and the buffet plentiful. The fine dining restaurant, El Olivo is stunning with prices to match and perfect for a special occasion. The Terrace is a more informal place to eat and again the food and service are of a good standard.
Spa: Unfortunately I didn't use the spa.
Activities: A range of activities are available including walking, tennis and mountain biking (this really is mountain biking in the truest sense and not for the faint hearted!). The tennis courts are well looked after and lessons can be booked.
Atmosphere: La Residencia has a calm, relaxing and completely unstuffy atmosphere. It is a fantastic place to just kick back and chill. Note: Children are only allowed at certain times of the year.
Value: Food and drink are not cheap in the hotel (or in the surrounding restaurants!) and you'll pay handsomely for a room in the summer, winter rates are much better value. Breakfast and free wi-fi are included in the rate.
Conclusion: I love the laid back vibe of this hotel and it really is in a stunning location. Although it is part of the Orient Express group it feels nothing like a chain hotel. In the centre of the village of Deia it's about as far from the 'images of Mallorca' that people often have and there are some fantastic restaurants within walking distance. It's a perfect place to visit at any time of the year and definitely appears on my list of favourite hotels from around the world. I also think it would make the perfect backdrop for a wedding, honeymoon or special celebration.
